2016 Golden Rose Field, Barriers & Odds

Golden Rose News

Astern has justified his clear favouritism at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon; successfully defending Godolphin crown in comfortably taking out the 2016 Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m). Astern received huge support from punters in the hours leading up to jump, and did his chances of success no harm whatsoever when jumping…

Golden Rose

The biggest event on the New South Wales spring calendar is the Group 1 2016 Golden Rose, a one million dollar race with massive importance on the national stage.

The Golden Rose is a three year old event run under set weight conditions with only the best performing horses up for selection.

The 2016 Golden Rose will be held on September 10, 2016.

The race is contested over a 1400m journey and held in the middle of September at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.

The scheduling of this race somewhat early in the spring adds extra pressure to trainers to have their horses 100 percent fit by the time the Golden Rose comes around.

This race only became a Group 1 event in 2009 after being upgraded to a Group 2 back in 2007.

It’s been a massive transformation and it is now the only race worth six figures on the entire New South Wales spring program.

Punters can get a great guide on the Golden Rose given that the Group 3 Run To The Rose is a direct lead up event.

Held in August, also at Rosehill Gardens, the Run To The Rose is used by the majority of horses going into the Group 1.

The Golden Rose has only been in action since 2003 but already in that time there’s been more than one horse to claim the double showing just how good a guide it is.

Paratroopers became the first when he did it in 2005 and Denman repeated the effort with his performances in 2009.

That’s not saying it’s the only option though, Warwick Farm also has too good options with the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes for colts and geldings as well as the Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes for fillies.

No filly has ever managed to complete the double however in 2006 Court Command won the Golden Rose after claiming the Up And Coming Stakes.

Going from this race the spring carnival offers any number of options across Sydney and Melbourne with horses set to split ways and either stay at Group 1 level or drop back to easier Listed assignments. And the Underwood Stakes is under way on the 19th of September, 2015.
