2011 Golden Rose Tips & Picks

September 9th, 2011

The 2011 Golden Rose tipping experts have been at it all week debating who they consider to be the best suited horse going into the race based on any number of reasons.

Sure Smart Missile is a short priced favourite on the tote but it’s hardly that way in reality with a spattering of cash coming in for nearly every other runner.

We feel it’s only fair we throw our hat into the ring as well and make our 2011 Golden Rose tips and hopefully make you a bit of cash tomorrow afternoon.

It might seem easy given there’s only six in the race but with such quality in all of them snd super strong form lines it may not be as easy as it first looks.

2011 Golden Rose Tips

He should be first out of the gates and if your assessment is correct he’ll be first across the stripe as well. Peter Snowden said before the Run To The Rose that this horse wasn’t there yet and warned punters not to back him. Despite that he still ran well coming home less than a length away and you get the sense it was exactly what Snowden wanted. Part two of the plan see’s him add blinkers and in a small field he’ll push to the front and dictate his own terms. No horse has ever run past him when he’s leading and no horse in this field can boast a Group 1, let alone two. Snowden was the king of juvenile Group 1’s and by this time tomorrow he’ll be the king of the first three year old Group 1 of the new season as well.

Smart Missile

Make no mistake that this horse will run well, in fact he’ll run very well. He’ll even pull to within a length of the winner but with no true pace in the race he’ll find it hard to unleash the sprint we saw at his last start. Cummings has said he’ll be settling at the back of the pack and that really leaves him open to needing a bit of luck even in this field. If Helmet pulls two clear on the bend that means Smart Missile could need to make up seven or eight lengths on the straight. He may have been able to do that against Foxwedge but it was off a better pace and a horse not quite as fit. Smart Missile can win the race no doubt but the way it’ll be run won’t suit him so we won’t be taking odds on.

Manawanui / Aeronautical

Sure it’s sitting on the fence a bit but we just can’t split these two and we think you may as well just box them and make it a first four. Both horses are coming off wins by big margins and both horses have an awesome late sprint. Like Smart Missile though this race won’t suit the sprinters so while they’ll run on they won’t quite get close enough. In terms of class Smart missile gets there ahead of them but they have the ability to make it a race for sure. Either could win and it wouldn’t surprise us but if they aren’t somewhere in the picture as they straighten that would. The two in front of them are proven to be up to the Group 1 challenge, it’s up to them to prove they are as well.

These are our picks for the 2011 Golden Rose and why we think they’ll finish there.
