Waterhouse Reveals Almalad May Contest 2014 Golden Rose

August 1st, 2014

Yet to be defeated over three race starts so-far, trainer Gai Waterhouse has revealed Almalad may still contest the featured Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) in September despite being set for both the Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate in October.

An impressive performer over two minor starts in his native New South Wales, Almalad laid his claims as one to watch over the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival when charging home to win the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse on June 7th.

Allowing time for just a short trip to the spelling paddock, Waterhouse told The Daily Telegraph that while her initial plans for the Al Maher gelding bypassed the Golden Rose, the now three-year-olds form in work may allow an early Group 1 tilt.

“Almalad is another two weeks away before he trials,” Waterhouse said.

“He’s only had a couple of weeks off after Queensland so the Golden Rose might not be too early. He is an outstanding horse.’

“He had a little let-up after that as all my Queensland horses did and he came back and he is really bouncing around Randwick.

“He is as fresh as a daisy and he is really going well.

“His main aims are the Guineas and the Cox Plate.

“I will set him for the Cox Plate.

“I think that any of those horses that raced through those Group races in the winter are certainly horses that could contest the top races in Sydney and Melbourne.

“Three-year-olds have an outstanding record in the Cox Plate, absolutely outstanding.”

Debuting to racing with a last-gasp victory in the Nuturf Plate (1000m) at the conclusion of 2013, Almalad showed Waterhouse he was worth a trip to Brisbane for the J.J. Atkins when overcoming a talented field to win the TAB Early Quaddie Plate (1200m) on May 24th by close to four lengths.
