2015 Golden Rose Likely for Rageese

July 14th, 2015

Rageese stamped his claims as a serious racing prospect through a short but impressive two-year-old campaign in autumn, and co-trainer Michael Hawkes has revealed the 2015 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) figures as the likely target for the colt in spring.

Regeese was unable to make much of a competitive impact in his maiden start when beating online a single runner home in the TAB.com.au Pate (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens in late 2014, and was subsequently returned to the paddock.

Jumping from the gates well in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) upon resuming this year, the son of Street Cry received an ideal run in transit but was unlucky to be blocked for a run late and finished a close second to Tarquin.

Having returned to the paddock following another impressive performance for second behind boom colt Pride Of Dubai in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on Day 1 of The Championships, Hawkes told Racing Ahead the team is thrilled with the size and condition gained by Regeese in his time away from racing and are confident he is a legitimate 2015 Golden Rose horse.

“He’s probably a bit unlucky that day to not win at Rosehill,” he said.

“After that run he’d done a big job, he’s still maturing, he was a tired horse and we got him to the Sires’ and I thought he was a very good chance.

“He was just a big baby but he’s come back now, he looks enormous, he’s bigger and stronger but he’s still a maidener.

“Hopefully something like the Golden Rose and quite possibly also the Caulfield Guineas for him down the track. I think you’ll see the best of him hopefully if he gets to the mile.”
