Godolphin colt Exosphere has justified his resounding favouritism at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon; producing an impressive turn of foot in the final straight to take out the featured Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m).

Exosphere returned to racing this time for a commanding win in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) a fortnight ago, and allowed himself the best chance of a maiden win at the highest level this afternoon when jumping from the gates well and settling in prime position off the pace of early leaders Holler and Speak Fondly.

Receiving an ideal run in transit and rounding onto the final straight with a clear racing line, the Lonhro colt immediately responded when asked for an extra effort by jockey James McDonald; mustering a strong sprint to pull clear and hit the line a length ahead of Speak Fondly; a brave Sebring Sun charging home for third.

McDonald delivered a perfectly-timed ride on Exosphere for success in the 2015 Golden Rose and was thrilled to notch up a maiden win in the feature race.

“It’s haunted me this race for a long time,” McDonald said.

“When I had my first ride in the race I rode an unbelievable colt called Foxwedge and nothing went to plan.

“It’s good to have Sheikh Mohammad’s colours on and ride this race on this super colt.

“I said to John (O’Shea) I wish I drew barrier 9 than 1 but as it turns out, you can’t really worry about that kind of stuff.”

John O’Shea was pleased with Exosphere’s performance for success in the 2015 Golden Rose, and while disappointed with the efforts produced by stable mates Holler and Shards, could take nothing away from the victorious colt.

“It was a nice win,” O’Shea said.

“I probably have to watch the tape because I sort of had my eye on the other two and I’m a bit perplexed as to what went on there.

“When Brett rolled to the rail I think it was we were either going to up the inside or go to his outsid and when he rolled to the rail there was always going to be a gap there.

“You know he’s got a good turn of foot and he’s hard to run down.”
