Astern has been backed into outright $3.80 favouritism in 2016 Golden Rose betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Omei Sword ($4), Divine Prophet ($4.60) and Yankee Rose ($5.50).

Will Astern justify favouritism and win the 2016 Golden Rose, or will one of his rivals post the day’s bug upset?

El Divino ($16)

The Gai Waterhouse-trained El Divino is sure to have taken plenty of benefit from his first-up run, is drawn ideally with Hugh Bowman and is simply over the 2016 Golden Rose odds at his current $16 quote for success. A half-brother to Winx, El Divino more than justified the hype that surrounded his debut when taking out a Gosford maiden by more than six lengths, before dead-heating the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1200m) with Astern during The Championships. Having placed fourth in the talent-rich Group 2 The Run To The Rose (1200m) a fortnight ago, Waterhouse is thrilled with the colt and he should take plenty of beating on Saturday.

Omei Sword ($4)

Classy filly Omei Sword has returned to racing in slick form this time and should be right in the finish of the Golden Rose, particularly with only 54.5kgs in tow and Joao Moreira in the saddle. Winning a Rosehill minor over 1100m on debut in February 24th, the daughter of High Chaparral ran second in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) but had clearly had enough by the time she finished ninth in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m). Having delivered a smart field a resounding defeat in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) first-up, Omei Sword is drawn ideally and will be hard to beat in the Golden Rose.

Astern ($3.80)

Astern has been a standout for Godolphin through his short but impressive career so far and his class is sure to count for a lot in the Golden Rose this weekend. Resuming this year for success in the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m), Astern failed to fire in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) but atoned with his strong performance in the Kindergarten Stakes. Having savaged the line for success in the Run To The Rose first-up, the Medaglia D’Oro colt will be partnered by James McDonald but will require some luck from barrier 12.
