Astern is the 2016 Golden Rose Winner

September 10th, 2016

Astern has justified his clear favouritism at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon; successfully defending Godolphin crown in comfortably taking out the 2016 Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m).

Astern received huge support from punters in the hours leading up to jump, and did his chances of success no harm whatsoever when jumping well and settling within the field as Yankee Rose and Good Standing took up the early pace.

Jockey James McDonald elected to peel the Medaglia D’Oro colt off the fence upon rounding onto the final straight, and was rewarded for the decision when Astern mustered a monumental turn of foot to easily overcome his rivals; finding the line several lengths ahead of Omei Sword and stable mate Impending.

McDonald was thrilled with Astern’s performance for success in the Golden Rose 2016 and already rates him better than last year’s victor Exosphere.

“It was pretty clear sailing and I’m glad I drew twelve of fourteen,” McDonald said.

“It was a slowly run race and no matter where I was in the field, as slow as the race was the better it was for this horse.

“There isn’t a horse in the land that would sprint past him over 400m. Bring on Winx!”

Trainer John O’Shea was thrilled with Astern’s performance for success and revealed that the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) in Melbourne in a fortnight is likely to figure as his next point of call.

“We just thought that the Run To The Rose was a very good form race, and if he got everything right and gave him a chance he would get the job done for us, and he did,” O’Shea said.

“We’re just lucky we’ve brought him back now and he’s going well.

“I think we need to get him home and see how he pulls up. We’d envisaged getting him to the Caulfield Guineas Prelude. On that performance it suggest he’ll get the Caulfield mile.”
